This impressive building is located in the small village of Kliczków. It is situated in the middle of Bory Dolnośląskie, just 15 km from Bolesławiec, on the Kwisa River. In terms of volume, it is one of the largest buildings of this type in Lower Silesia.

Kliczków Castle - history
going on Kliczków Castle date back to the 13th century. It was built around 1290 and in the earliest centuries served as a stronghold protecting the Duchy of Świdnica-Jawor. It was founded by the Piast prince Bolko I the Strict, probably to defend against Czech invasions. In the following centuries, the castle changed its owner many times. It was owned by the powerful families von Zedlitz, then von Rechenberg, von Schellendorf, von Frankenberg. From around the middle of the 18th century until 1945, the estate remained in the hands of the Solm-Tecklenburg family.
Successive owners modernized its form until the last renovation in the 1880s. It was then that it was given a form referring to the famous castles on the Loire in France. The scope of changes made was impressive. New towers and gables were added, the façade was enriched with decorative portals, the interiors were rebuilt and their new design was taken care of. In addition, a huge, 80-hectare English-style park was established. A family mausoleum and a cemetery for horses were also built, which today are a tourist attraction.
Kliczków Castle today
On Kliczków Castle currently consists of two residential wings in the neo-gothic and neo-renaissance style, surrounding the courtyard. Also on the property Kliczków Castle we can find a family mausoleum together with a former cemetery for horses, probably the only one in Poland. There we will find the last two preserved tombstones of these noble animals, on which the names of the horses and the dates of their death are engraved. The whole is surrounded by a large, 80-hectare English-style garden, where we can find, among others, chestnut trees, Douglas firs and Canadian hemlocks.
Inside Kliczków Castle unique rooms have been preserved. These are: the historic Library, the Theater Room decorated with polychromes with a hunting motif, the Fireplace Room with an impressive stove or the Court Hall, the so-called White.
Kliczków Castle - legends
Kliczków Castle, like most ancient buildings of this type, hides a certain mystery. It's a story of love and betrayal... The castle is visited by the ghost of a centurion who fell in love with his commander's wife, whom he was supposed to take care of in the knight's absence. He became involved with her, convincing everyone of the death of the rightful spouse. When the knight returned from the war, a traitorous subject imprisoned him so that the truth would not come out. After a few years, however, he managed to escape. When he learned the whole truth, he imprisoned his wife and her lover in the dungeons. He died of hunger in the basement of Kliczków Castle, and it is his ghost that haunts the stronghold today.
