Church of Peace in Jawor is one of the most important sacral monuments in Lower Silesia. The temple with exceptional architectural values is primarily a reminder of the struggles of the local Evangelical community, who wanted to live in accordance with their religion. As a result of these factors, both the Church of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Church of Peace in Jawor it was created as a result of a compromise after the Thirty Years' War, and its name commemorates the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 which ended it. The persecution of Evangelicals in the Jawor land led to the removal of all Evangelical churches, and the believers were left with nothing. Therefore, a delegation was sent from Jawor to the emperor himself, who was to authorize the construction of the church. The emperor happily issued a building permit on September 3, 1652, but he set certain conditions.
The building had to be located outside the city walls. It could not resemble the temples erected so far, nor could it have a tower. In addition, his buildings could only use materials such as straw, wood, clay or sand. The cost of such an undertaking was also a problem for the residents, so they had to ask for help to finance the construction, which came from the Protestant regions of Europe.
Built in the years 1654-1655 according to the design of Albrecht von Säbisch, the church is distinguished by the use of a half-timbered structure. Particularly noteworthy is its unique Baroque interior, with four floors of galleries decorated with landscapes, coats of arms and paintings illustrating the Old and New Testaments. The temple is equipped with organs designed by Adolph Lummert, later rebuilt by the Schlag & Söhne company. Thanks to them, numerous concerts are held in the church.
