The Łomnica dam is one of the most popular attractions in Karpacz. It is an ideal place for a walk, during which you can admire the picturesque cascade flowing down to the water reservoir created in this place.
Dam on Łomnica - history of the place
The Łomnica is a left tributary of the Bóbr River, flowing out in the vicinity of Równia pod Śnieżką. The river is a little over 20 km long. Already in the Middle Ages, the Łomnica valley was inhabited by the Walloons - newcomers from Western Europe, prospectors of gold, precious stones and minerals.
Until the construction of the dam in Karpacz, Łomnica was one of the most wild and dangerous rivers in the Karkonosze Mountains. In the upper section, the average drop of its waters is 72 per mille, and in the lower section it is seven times smaller. This difference, combined with large fluctuations in water levels after spring rainfall and thaws, has led to floods more than once.

At the end of July 1897, there was a cloudburst over Karpacz, which caused another flood. Łomnica, Łomniczka and many smaller mountain streams overflowed their banks. And this led to massive destruction in the city. The raging torrent brought down bridges and a newly built railway line, and destroyed many streets, houses and farms. After this incident, a decision was made to regulate the river on many sections and to build a retention dam made of stone blocks and concrete, lined with granite slabs. The dam has a nominal capacity of 540,000 m³. Special dams were also erected at that time, stopping the rock material carried by the water. The investment was carried out in the years 1910-1915. The dam created a small dam lake, and the excess of water falls down picturesque cascades.
Since then Dam on Łomnica protects the inhabitants of Karpacz against the element of water. It also stops the rock debris flowing down from the mountains, which, carried by the river, would pose a threat to the village. The dam passed its strength test during subsequent floods, including the infamous "millennium flood" in 1997, effectively protecting the city from flooding.
It is very pleasant to walk along the ridge of the dam, which is 105 meters long. It's definitely worth a visit if you're nearby. The engaging landscape is especially liked by the bride and groom, who often choose this place for their wedding session.
