Sosnówka near Karpacz
It is a village beautifully situated at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains by the lagoon Sosnówka. It almost connects with the crowded Karpacz, but it is still little known and popular. This is her great advantage. It is much calmer here, and the views are not obscured by advertising banners. You can feel the atmosphere of the Karkonosze sauté village. The buildings have remained almost unchanged since the houses were erected by their former builders, although, of course, over the years, new buildings have been added, and the existing ones have gained modern amenities without losing anything of their charm.
The main road winds along a swift mountain stream, Sośniaka. The stream flows through the entire village and supplies the reservoir located here. It is the water combined with the view of the mountain peaks that makes the greatest impression. Of course, there are also other attractions here, such as an altar in one of the churches, classified as a class zero monument, the ruins of Henry's Castle or a miraculous spring at the Chapel of St. Anna.

At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a "Corps of guides and porters of sedan chairs" in this area. Porters were stationed in Karpacz, Sosnówka, Sobieszów, Piechowice and Szklarska Poręba.
The so-called "traveling on poles" was very popular - it allowed privileged social strata to see and explore the mountains, but without any effort. Tourists were carried in litters even to Śnieżka!

Filmmaker in love with Sosnówka - Ian Hickinbotham
Sosnówka charmed many tourists with its charm. One of the most famous is certainly Ian Hickinbotham, who was friends and worked with such directors as Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg. He started his career in the world of film very modestly, with the position of wardrobe assistant, and laboriously climbed the career ladder. He worked his way up from assistant set manager and production manager to assistant director and producer. He has worked on dozens of films, including such masterpieces as Shining Stanley Kubrick, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Munich Steven Spielberg or Gladiators Ridley Scott.
And how did he get from the world of film to Sosnówka, after all, a small summer resort in the Karkonosze Mountains? While filming in Poland Proof of life directed by Taylor Hackford, Ian Hickinbotham met Aneta Cebula, working at Lew Rywin's Heritage Films agency. Apparently, after leaving Poland, he called her every day for several months, until he finally confessed how he felt about her. They became a couple and decided to build a common house in Poland. They looked at dozens of houses in different locations, but they chose Sosnówka. In 2002, they bought a completely dilapidated villa sonland, designed by Wilhelm Kiehnel at the beginning of the 20th century. Before the war, the Auras sisters ran a slimming treatments. Aneta and Ian started to renovate the villa, wanting to restore it to its former glory. Some of the work Ian did himself, reconstructing stone and wood elements.
Old cemetery in Sosnówka
At this point, one would like to write that they lived happily ever after, but this story - although it sounds like from a movie (nomen omen!) - unfortunately has no happy ending ... Ian Hickinbotham died of cancer at the age of only 53. He was buried in Sosnówka, at old cemetery by church of st. Martin. Instead of flowers for his grave, the family requested donations for the renovation of the historic, 18th-century altar of St. Anna Samotrzecia, which decorates this cemetery church. Steven Spielberg also joined the donors, wanting to honor the memory of a longtime collaborator. The optimistic accent is that the altar, very valuable, has actually been renovated.
Monuments in Sosnówka
There are two churches in Sosnówka Dolna. Baroque church of St. Martin from the eighteenth century, which used to be a parish church, and now serves as a cemetery chapel. Valuable epitaphs and baroque tombstones have been preserved. Inside we will find a priceless wooden one rococo altar, polychrome and gilded, dedicated to Anna Samotrzecia, dating from the end of the 18th century. The original church was a Gothic building. The first mention of it can be found in 1318. In its place, using the walls of the old church, was erected in the years 1796-1797 another temple. It is a hall building with a separate, polygonal presbytery and a square tower. Inside you can see e.g. barrel vault with lunettes. The church is covered with a shingle roof, and on the wall that surrounds it and on the walls of the cemetery there are stone tombstones from the 18th century.
The second is the post-Evangelical church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, built in the years 1816-1820, with a beautiful hall interior with double galleries. In addition to these two churches, a former inn from 1834, the Chapel of St. Anna and a house from the end of the 19th century, located in the vicinity of this chapel, in Sosnówka Górna.
Architecture of Sosnówka: Tyrolean and checkered houses
In the village you will also find Tyrolean houses, built by religious refugees from the Zillertal Valley in Tyrol. They have a characteristic, external balcony at the height of the first floor, connecting the economic part of the house with the residential part. It allowed him to easily walk around the house and perform his duties during heavy snowfall.
Noteworthy are also numerous houses of traditional construction, half-timbered and log, about 200 years old. In the past, these were weavers' houses, as Sosnówka was once famous for its linen and then damask products, mainly table linen and veils.
Sosnowka attractions
Sosnówka offers a lot tourist attractions. Beautiful, ancient forests, ideal for hiking, not requiring any special condition, encourage you to be active. There you will find forest lakes and swift streams. Here and there we will see stone benches arranged by the former inhabitants of these lands, inviting to rest. We can also come across wilderness areas where mysterious drowners and beautiful rusalkas certainly live. Who knows, maybe we'll be able to see them on a walk, in one of the many secluded places...
Walking trails
The great advantage of Sosnówka is the lack of crowds of tourists. Beautiful trails remain almost empty, which allows you to enjoy the mountain climate, unspoilt by the flood of visitors. And yet, several dozen years ago, it was through Sosnówka that the main route to the highest peak of the Karkonosze Mountains, the majestic Śnieżka, led.
St. George's Chapel Anna
This place can be found on the western, forest-covered slope of Grabowiec. Initially - in the 13th century – Chapel of St. Anna was wooden, while the brick building was built in the years 1718-1719 and was built thanks to the generosity of Hans Anton Schaffgotsch. This rotunda (14 by 10 meters) was built on the site of pagan beliefs; one of the forest paths is even called the Witches' Path!
The greatest asset of this place is the Good Source (also called the Source of Happiness or the Source of Love), beating right under the altar of the chapel. The radon water from this spring was channeled outside, as the water, due to its composition, was very damaging to the interior. For this reason, the paintings in the chapel were painted on copper sheet, and not on wood or canvas as usual, because the paint on the paintings faded very quickly. Inside, there is a main altar with a painting of Saint Anne with Jesus, Mary and Joseph, a pulpit and two side altars, and a figure of Saint Lawrence. Next to the chapel there used to be an inn serving pilgrims.
Source of Happiness at the chapel of St. Anna
According to historical records, this water has been considered extraordinary for centuries. Apparently, the miraculous power of water was appreciated by witches who gathered for sabbaths. Legend has it that every person who fills their mouth with water and circles the chapel seven times without spilling a drop is guaranteed happiness in love. Isn't it a very simple recipe for an undisturbed marital idyll? Many young couples getting married in Sosnówka or the surrounding area and organizing a wedding here take advantage of this opportunity. Because what's the harm in helping a bit of happiness... While performing "magic" you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Jeleniogórska Valley.
Another legend tells of a prince who was tracking a wounded deer. He met him bathing in a spring, and during this bath, the animal's wounds healed instantly.
From Sosnówka Dolna to the Chapel of St. Anna can be reached along the yellow trail. The walk takes about an hour. You can also get there by car, taking the route between Karpacz Górny and Sosnówka. The road leads through the forest, it is quite winding.
Ruins of Prince Henry's Castle
Great love, hating fathers, secret trysts… Sound familiar? No, contrary to appearances, this is not a story about Romeo and Juliet. And about the descendants of the von Reuss and Schaffgotsch families. The Spirit of the Mountains met them when they slipped away to meet halfway between their castles - Chojnik and Prince Henry's Castle. Karkonosz, moved by their feelings, asked how he could help them. The bride and groom asked him to make their love never fade. When the lovers' parents found out about the forbidden feeling, they imprisoned the young lady and the young man in their castles. So the couple in love began digging a tunnel to be able to see each other again. At last they met under the hornbeam roots in Red Valley. They hugged each other as tightly as possible, the tree covered them with its roots, and the Karkonosze Mountains took them from this world and filled the tunnel. Their families declined and never regained their former glory, as punishment for not being able to appreciate the true affection of their descendants.
So much for the legend, but in fact the ruins of Prince Henry's Castle were ruins from the very beginning, not just a castle. They were built in 1806, when there was a fashion for romantic buildings. Prince Heinrich LXII von Reuss ordered this hunting lodge to be built, because Grodno Hill (504 m above sea level), the highest peak of the Łomnickie Hills, offers unforgettable views of almost the entire Karkonosze range and the picturesque Sosnówka. The location of the castle gives you the opportunity to admire the beautiful rock formations.
To see the wonderful ruins Prince Henry's Castle, just take a short walk from Sosnówka along the yellow trail. The road will take us only 20-30 minutes.
Chojnik Castle
Medieval visit Chojnik Castle can be quite an attraction. This is one of the most famous castle ruins in Lower Silesia. According to the legend, the Chojnik castle was inhabited by Princess Kunegunda, who subjected candidates to her hand to severe trials. If someone did not pass the test, they quickly ended their lives - in the abyss ... This 150-meter cliff, the so-called Hell Valley, is located on the south-eastern side of the castle.
Chojnik
The Chojnik Castle stands on the mountain of the same name, at an altitude of 627 m above sea level, and although it is not a significant height, the landscapes are really wonderful - from the top there is a perfect view of the Jeleniogórska Valley and the Karkonosze Mountains. The stronghold was never rebuilt after a fire in the 18th century, but the ruins are picturesque enough to make it worth a visit. In addition, from Chojnik you will see a wonderful panorama of the Karkonosze Mountains and the surrounding area, especially if you climb the tower.
The advantage of a trip to Chojnik is the fact that you can choose the right degree of difficulty to suit the abilities of each tourist. You can get there both on a fairly steep trail and on a gentle walking path. There are several ways to get to the top: the blue trail from Jagniątków, the red trail from Sobieszów and the black trail from the center of Zachełmie. Along the way, we will encounter interesting rock formations and mountain streams.
Already in the 19th century, Chojnik became popular and was visited by many tourists, there was even a restaurant there. Today, knights' tournaments are held there for lovers of the old times, as well as games and fairs for the inhabitants and guests of the Jeleniogórska Valley.
Lapland village of Kalevala in Borowice
If you like frosty climates, it is worth going to a Sami village. The northern lights, dog sledding and reindeer are a substitute for Finland in the heart of the Karkonosze Mountains. There you can see typical Sami tents and, thanks to virtual games, learn about the lifestyle, history and customs of the peoples of the North.
Park and manor in Bukowiec
This place is called Silesian Arcadia, is part of the Valley of Palaces and Gardens. The picturesque park is the perfect backdrop for wedding photos! Wedding in Sosnówka will allow for a great session in the nearby palaces.
Park and Manor in Bukowiec - the history of this place dates back to the 14th century. It was then that the village of Bukowiec was established, and the von Zeidlitz family decided to build a ancestral seat. At the end of the 18th century, the palace passed into the hands of a new owner. The manor house was rebuilt in neoclassical style and the park was enlarged. The most interesting building is the Teahouse from 1803, which is associated with a romantic story. Friedrich von Reden loved his wife Friederika very much. On the occasion of the second wedding anniversary, he gave her a very fashionable pavilion in the form of a Greek temple. In addition, he placed a declaration of love on the building in Latin: CONIUGI DULCISSIMAE FW COM REDEN, or To the sweetest wife of FW Count Reden. Isn't that touching? In Bukowiec, it is also worth visiting a magnificent English-style park.

Walloon stone
This name comes from the Walloons, i.e. the legendary treasure hunters that can be found in the mountains. These newcomers allegedly came from Italy, France or Spain. In addition to gold and silver, they also mined precious stones. They left a mark on the stone in the form of a cross and a hand, where you can see a hollow similar to a human figure.
Chybotek in Przesieka
wobble is a rock formation consisting of several larger granite boulders. The highest boulder, with a diameter of 4 meters and a weight of about 7 tons, is famous for the fact that, although huge, it can be made to wobble with little effort thanks to the fact that it is perfectly balanced. It is located approx. 590 m above sea level in the Jizera Mountains on the Walloon Trail. Legend has it that the entrance to the underground treasury is hidden under the boulder, in which the Walloons hid valuables extracted from the ground.
Wang temple
This wooden church, made of Norwegian pine, is a unique monument of Scandinavian sacral architecture from the 12th century. It was built in southern Norway on Lake Vang, hence its name. In the 19th century, it turned out to be too small for the needs of the local community and was sold to the Prussian king, Frederick William IV. Originally, it was to be erected on Pawia Island near Berlin, but this idea was abandoned and a new location for the temple was sought. Countess Fryderyka von Reden from Bukowiec proposed that the church be erected in the Karkonosze Mountains, for Evangelicals from Karpacz and the surrounding area. In 1844, the temple was officially opened, situated on the slope of Czarna Góra (885 m above sea level), halfway from Karpacz to Śnieżka. The ceremony was honored by the presence of King Frederick William IV himself.

The source on Grabowiec - a magical and sacred place
This source has always been associated with magical power. Various rituals were probably held here already in pagan times. This is evidenced by numerous archaeological finds. As part of the promotion of a new religion, a Christian chapel was erected around the 12th century at what is considered a magical spring. This place must have really aroused great emotions and had religious significance. Probably for this reason it was repeatedly attacked and destroyed. First, it was destroyed by the Hussites, then rebuilt, only to fall victim to turmoil again during the Thirty Years' War. What was so dangerous about the spring on the slope that they tried to erase it from memory? Maybe it was the fact that it reminded of the eternal power of nature and the power of faith in the power of healing through contact with it?
Good Source
The spring in Grabowiec is called Good Spring. It is the oldest place of worship on the Polish side of the Karkonosze Mountains. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that the water from this spring was served daily on his table by Count Hans Anton von Schaffgotsch - the founder of the brick chapel. A special messenger delivered two vats to the palace in Cieplice every day.
Chakra on the Frying Pan
Near the miraculous spring there is a group of Grabowieckie Rocks, reaching a height of up to 35 meters. It consists of three rocks. Including one unique, because it is large and flat, and its shape resembles a frying pan. Hence its name. It could have been a place of worship and sacrifice. Especially since it is quite close to the source mentioned above. Together, they may have been the center of an ancient cult and magical ritual. People have always felt a magical power in this place, which at the same time aroused some anxiety in them. As an interesting fact, when in 1697 Count Schaffgotsch wanted to see the nearby mountains, he included an exorcist in his retinue for fear of the Mountain Spirit!
Today, no one does it anymore, but people still try to explain the strange power of this place. Some believe that it is located in the area of Patelnia chakra, which has the ability to accumulate energy. Whether we believe it or not, it is worth standing on this stone and looking around. There is a beautiful view of the Karkonosze Mountains, the Jizera Mountains, the Jeleniogórska Valley and Rudawy Janowickie.
